Jav D Interview

By Michael (Disco) Demby

The United Kingdom seems to be the number one beading ground for world-class DJs, producers, and other dance talent. Four of the top 10 DJs in the World are from the UK (according to www.thedjlist.com). This is why we are not surprised that another talent from our neighbors across the sea is swiftly moving up in the ranks as a national DJ. Born and raised in London’s West End, this DJ/Producer is one of the newest artists to hit the progressive music scene in recent years. Ever since he crossed the pond into America, he’s been turning heads of promoters nationwide with his unique sound and consistently smooth flow. Fellow patrons of a life so intense, today we hear from a very good friend of mine, Jav D.

Disco: Where are you from, how long have you been in your current location, your age, education level, style of music.

JD: Well, originally born and raised in the UK but relocated to Washington DC back in 2001. I’m 26 and hold one bachelor degrees in business and one in marketing. I play electronica… ;)

Disco: How and why did you get into the music scene/DJ business?

JD: Well, at first, I was a hip/hop head. My cousins have always listened to this style of music [electronic] and were quite the party animals. If it wasn’t for a CD mixed by IAN OSSIA, I would not be here. Thank you IAN. You know exactly what CD I’m talking about too.

Disco: Please… go on?

JD: Renaissance 3 CD1 mixed by Ian Ossia, F’in bad ass right there man… there was a track on there, I cant remember it now. I think it was number 9 on the CD…

Disco: Well let us know what you remember it:

JD: WDiscol do mate.

Disco: So what are you doing when you’re not listening to Ian Ossia? Do you have a mDiscod mannered alter ego?

JD: Well I have my own web design business and I’m a graphic designer by trade. I’ve always been quite the artist.

Disco: Yes I see… quite the website too www.jav-d.com.

JD: I did everything myself…

Disco: When and where was your first gig? Was it a success?

JD: First gig ever played was at NATION, Washington DC, in 2003. Was it a success? You tell me.

Disco: So your career exploded after that?

JD: Well… after that I created ‘smu[th] and started my own events. With the success of that, I got a weekly spot on XM radio, and then from there, DI.fm and regularly broadcasted on FM radio in the Canary Islands on Tenerife. Then, broadcasting in IBIZA, and I just found out today that I’m on Sirius Radio.

Production wise I started a year ago and now (thank god) managed to release a few singles and remixes on Coldharbour Recordings and Fiberline.

My career really has not exploded yet, but what does the future hold?

You’ll see. ;-).

Disco: Well honestly, it sounds like you’re exploding all over the place. Tell us about your schedule. You hectic?

JD: Very... busy with gigs coming up, traveling to UK to get in the studio with a few friends and the website business, graphics, and productions.

And you bugging me to do this interview hahaha but I got it done ;)

With the second year anniversary of ‘smu[th] coming up and the label launch, I neeeeeeeeed more hours…

Disco: Tell us about your tracks. Anything currently being signed?

JD: Well I got a few remixes coming out on Fiberline Records, working on 2 more for them at the moment and a couple originals. Matt Rowan – Stonker, Gary Dickenson – Hypnotising, and Narek & Danny Bullo – I Need Somebody are my released remixes. Making Waves is one of my originals.

Looking Too Deep is the collaboration with Lange and is due for release on Coldharbour Recordings this month.

Disco: Which original is your favorite? How did you come up with the name and sound that makes it your own?

JD: Well personal favorite has to be Making Waves. Started making that back in February and it just got released on Fiberline.

How did I come up with the name? Well read the quote from my website that Markus Schulz gave me and you’ll see. And the sound, well… I cant even answer that. Its something I went for trying to blend the rock world with electronic and dark bass lines and 80s sound... Dude that track is fucked up... Enjoy it.

Disco: I can’t wait to download it. www.fiberlineaudio.com for those interested. So you mentioned above that you have regular internet shows and satellite shows. Any club residencies or any upcoming shows you want our readers to know about?

JD: Residencies at Lima in Washington DC and a few others. The second anniversary of ‘Smu[th] , December 2nd, at GLOW , Washington DC. Be there... I got a surprise for everyone.

Disco: You know I’ll be there… Tell us what goes through your mind when you are look out into the sea of people all moving to your music/beats?

JD: You are all my children muwahahahaha

Disco: Should I be scared? What would your life be like without music?

JD: There is no life with out music.

Disco: Alright, how about there’s just not enough music and you’re forced to play one track the whole night. You can scratch, edit, and sample the track, but you can not change the record. Which track would you pick and why?

JD: Hmm that’s a tough question… if it’s for the crowd?

[Long pause]

Dude.. I don’t know…Oh wait… TOMCRAFT – LONLINESS... F’in Baddd asss.

Disco: Beyond recommending that particular track, what advice can you give to inspiring DJs?

JD: Be true to your self, smu[th] when u play, and let the music control you, not the other way around.

Disco: Words of wisdom Jav. What about a person for inspiration. Imagine you are towards the end of your set, the night is coming to a close, and your idol walks into the club. Who is your idol and what would you do?

JD: Well... it actually happened to me 2 weeks ago. I was DJing and with out even knowing someone was there, I feel a tap on my shoulder. I look back and its ALI from DEEPDISH. He says HEY… All I could do was stand in shock and say "What the fuck are you doing here." LOL… we both just cracked up…

Disco: That’s awesome… sounds like a pretty awesome night. Tell us how you keep your buzz on with your life?

JD:

Disco: Jav, thank you so much for your time and letting us pick your brain….

JD: Wait wait wait… There are a few people out there that, without them, I wouldn’t have been able to make it this far. Masoud A. from DC who gave me the push and drive. Markus Schulz has always been a great influence on me, the sounds of Gabriel & Dresden have pushed me certain ways and Matt Darey and Lange have been a great support. I wanna take this opportunity to thank em all.

Disco: Hey can you get me an interview with them?

JD: Haha, dude I’ll try… I don’t control their PR.
